Many people love to celebrate the holidays with a bang – big feasts, fireworks, games, parties, etc. But there are others who prefer a low-key setup under the tropical sun – sipping margaritas at the beach, eating fresh seafood, and meeting new people at an island where the crowds don’t go.

1. Molokai, Hawaii

The mention of Hawaii instantly conjures up images of white sand beaches, infinite coastlines, rugged mountains, lush forests, amazing food, and 5-star resorts. The two most popular islands are Oahu and Maui. Both beautiful but it’s where most tourists go. Located between these two is Molokai, a more relaxed spot with only regular-sized hotels, and a breathtaking 170km of pristine coastline to share with a small number of travellers.  

2. Koh Kood, Thailand

While Phuket and Koh Samui are the more popular choice, just an hour’s flight from Bangkok is Koh Kood – one of Thailand’s last unspoiled islands. There are no big chain hotels in sight, just a laid back island that is beautiful, tranquil, and serene. It’s the perfect holiday destination for people who want to get away from it all and spend time to recharge.

3. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

Bali has become one of those dreaded destinations for Australians because of the tourism explosion. However, Gili Trawangan, a tiny, unassuming island near Lombok (not too far from our shores), is the perfect solution for those who are looking for a quick tropical getaway. Compared to the main tourist destinations in Indonesia, Gili has no motorised traffic. Bikes are the most common mode of transportation among locals. There are waterside cafes and the island is perfect for fishing and living.
