We’ve seen the cloud develop rapidly over the past five decades, but issues like security breaches in high profile companies that constantly grace the evening news can make the general population a bit apprehensive about actually using it.

What exactly is the Cloud?

The ‘cloud’, even for the best of us, can still be quite confusing. It’s most basic definition is that it is a technology that enables remote data storage by using data servers, instead of a phone or a computer hard drive. It saves you memory space and makes access to stored files easy using virtually any computing device.

An example of an application that uses the cloud is Dropbox. A service that allows its users to upload and download files that can be accessed on any computing device with an internet access.

Why should you embrace it?

If you’ll think about it, the cloud is a huge leap in technology as it makes collaboration over the internet easier and faster. This is only one of its advantages, it can also be used to back up your photos, documents, and other files, in case you lose or damage your phone, laptop or computer. Other examples of cloud storage are Google Drive, One Drive, and iCloud (Apple). These are all available for you to connect your precious files to any time. 

The primary concern that most people have about the cloud is overall security. It really depends on which system you are using. Companies employ various levels of security and have different ways of protecting your privacy. The rule of the thumb is, when signing up for cloud services, check the reputation of the provider and have a strong password. If you choose to use the cloud as a digital storage option and if you follow these guidelines, the cloud is safe and will be extremely beneficial for you.
