How to Avoid Getting Sick When You Fly

With thousands of people flying on airlines everyday, it’s no surprise that planes are a smorgasbord of germs, bacteria, and viruses. No wonder airplane sickness is pretty common.

However, there are plenty of ways how to preserve your health and stay in tip top shape during your air travels. Check out these ten tips.

Drink lots of water and avoid alcohol

You already probably know that alcohol is dehydrating, but do you know how? It actually does in a variety of ways. Primarily, it decreases the body’s release of antidiuretic hormone that the body use to reabsorb water. Decrease in anti-diuretic hormone causes the body to lose more fluids than normal. Dehydration makes it easier to pick up illnesses, so avoid alcohol and increase your water and avoid alcohol.

Wear comfy clothes

Temperatures vary in airplanes. Dressing in layers helps stay warmer when the air conditioning is in full blast. As much as possible, avoid airplane-provided blankets and pillows, unless they are freshly washed and sealed. You’ll never know how many passenger have used them before you.

Wear shoes to the bathroom

This is a no brainer. Never step on the bathroom floor without shoes or slippers on as you step on unwanted liquids on the floor.

Pack antibacterial wipes in your carry-on

Anti-bacterial wet wipes are always handy when you feel like the seats are icky or the pull up table doesn’t look trustworthy.

Bring healthy snacks

Cheetos, potato chips, and sodas, are pretty tempting especially during long haul flights. These sodium and sugar-filled snacks doesn’t offer much nutrition to your body. Instead, bring organic pretzels and crackers for your plane snacks.
